Working with Chlorine or Saltwater? We have component recommendations for these applications

check / pressure relief valves for chlorine or saltwater applications

Summer is in full swing, and we are reminded of our customers in the water industry with a specific focus on applications dealing with chlorine or saltwater. Due to the customizable nature of our products, we offer solutions to customers working with these highly corrosive substances.

For chlorine, our biggest recommendation is to use a specialty plastic body material, such as PVDF, due to its overall excellent corrosion and chemical resistance. We also recommend a Viton® o-ring option because of its excellent chemical compatibility with this substance.

Saltwater applications have more flexible component options. We often recommend Polypropylene or PVDF for plastics. Buna-NEPDM, or Viton® are great o-ring options. Please note when working with saltwater, we often find that customers may be concerned about the spring material being compatible with it – especially if the device is intended for long-term use. We offer springs in Stainless Steel, Hastelloy, and Titanium. Stainless steel and saltwater can lead to corrosion over time, but our additional spring materials are available as a solution. In our experience, we have found titanium to be an ideal choice in devices exposed to saline, polluted water, and/or saltwater because it can hold up in highly caustic environments over a longer period of time versus other materials.

As always, it is important to discuss all liquids / gasses coming into contact with our valves, as well as application environment and intended shelf-life with us. For questions or assistance with your own unique low pressure, low flow project, contact us.
