Did you know? Most Smart Products USA Check Valves are also Pressure Relief Valves

Most Smart Products USA check valves are also pressure relief valves

Practically all of our check valves have a dual role as pressure relief valves. The reason some customers might not realize you can use our valves for anything other than a check valve is because flapper, disc or ball type check valves don’t have a spring to resist pressure in the flow direction. These valves rely on gravity or back pressure to close the valve. We can provide versatility and reliability with all our different spring combinations. We can even tailor a custom spring to meet specific pressure requirements.

With our spring loaded design, the valve can be Tee-mounted to perform as a pressure relief valve or a vacuum relief valve, as well as inline as a standard check valve. A pressure relief valve will have the flow direction away from the pressure of the system, and a vacuum relief valve will have the mounting inverted with the flow direction towards the vacuum source. Depending on how the valve is oriented in the system, you can insert any of our Smart Products valves to achieve your desired goal. They can even be used as a pressure regulator depending on the flow requirements of your system.

When browsing our valve options, keep in mind:
• Most of our check valves can function as relief valves as long as the o-ring side vents to atmosphere, so it’s based on where the pressure is located. In relief applications, pressure acts on the back of the poppet, and in check applications it acts on the head of the poppet
• Conversely, the 103 and 109 pressure relief valves can be used as a check valve by simply turning it around
• An example of our relief valves are the 100 series used in battery applications
