O-rings are a key component of how our valves work. They provide an internal seal to keep the valve's poppet in place, as well as move forward off of the poppet’s cartridge seat to allow regulated flow through the valve. Additionally, our side seal valves come with an exterior o-ring design that secures it in-line and provides an extra barrier against leaks, if needed.
In the pictures you can see that the o-ring provides the “seat” or seal of the valve. That is when rubber meets hard plastic and the o-ring forms a tight seal on the poppet as the valve closes. It comes to rest, and the flow of liquid or gas stops. How tight of a seal depends on the o-ring material and poppet material, among other factors. Certain combinations seal better than others. However, over time, everything has some leakage.
We offer standard o-ring materials to include:
- Buna-N (Nitrile)
- Ethylene-Propylene
- Viton®
- Silicone
- Fluorosilicone
- Aflas
We are also able to quickly source other o-ring materials including more specialized o-rings, such as:
- Kalrez®
- Kimrez®
- Chemraz®
- Markez®
A Product & Application Specialist can assist customers in selecting the right o-ring option for a specific design criteria. When building your custom valve, be sure to share all liquids/gasses coming into contact with the valve, application environment, pressure requirements, and intended shelf life.
